Three Prostrations (Everyone)

[All lines in the ceremony are repeated twice, once by kokyo, followed by everyone else with the exception of the Refuges which are chanted only once.]

REPENTANCE (Everyone kneels. This verse is repeated three times, with a prostration at the end of each verse.)

All my past and harmful karma, 
Born from beginningless greed, hate, and delusion, 
Through body, speech and mind, 
I now fully avow.

HOMAGES (Everyone stands. This set of lines is done three times, one prostration after each line.)

Homage to the Seven Buddhas before Buddha 
Homage to Shakyamuni Buddha 
Homage to Maitreya Buddha 
Homage to Manjusri Bodhisattva 
Homage to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva 
Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva 
Homage to the Succession of Ancestors 

FOUR BODHISATTVA VOWS (Everyone kneels. This verse repeated three times, with a prostration at the end of each verse.)

Beings are numberless, I vow to free them.
Delusions are inexhaustible, I vow to end them.
Dharma gates are boundless, I vow to enter them.
The Buddha Way is unsurpassable, I vow to realize it.

REFUGES (Everyone stands; one prostration after each line.)

     I take refuge in Buddha. (Kokyo only)
May all beings embody the great way, resolving to awaken. (Everyone)

     I take refuge in Dharma. (Kokyo only)
May all beings deeply enter the sutras, wisdom like an ocean. (Everyone)

     I take refuge in Sangha. (Kokyo only)
May all beings support harmony in the community, free from hindrance. (Everyone)
